SPAIN
MOUNTAINS, RIVERS, FOREST & COASTLINE

For some the challenge of Morocco may be a ferry to far, while others think France has been overdone, so then why not come to Spain with the Adventure Club for a trip you will truly remember!

With virtually guaranteed sunshine, a relaxed way of life, cheap fuel! And off-road trails to suit most types of vehicles and driving standards we are sure that the 2002 Adventure club Treks into the Sierra de Las Nieves and surrounding areas will be a resounding success.

After taking the ferry from the UK (expected price for vehicle and 2 people with cabin and a return will be approx £465) on the evening of the 24th September you will spend two nights on the cruise ship as you journey to Spain. The ferry docks at Bilboa at 7.30am on the morning of the 26th, you have time to enjoy this incredible country as you take the one and half-day journey via Madrid and Granada to our rendezvous point outside of Malaga. We would like you arrive at midday on the 27th and after checking in at campsites or hotels you will have the rest of the day free to explore. The accommodation can be of your choosing we will cater for those who wish to camp and those wanting hotels, we will try to arrange hotels of varying prices and standards.

On the 28th we will lead each group of 6 vehicles across the mountains towards Nueva Andalucia and then off-road on mule trails! Passing “castana santa” (1000 year old chestnut tree) and to the spring where the Rio Verde starts. Into the Sierra de la Nieves National Park and across to Tolox. Late lunch near Tolox, then off-road to Monda a delightful old Andalucian town with its own converted castle.

On the 29th we will go as a group to Gibraltar where you have a free day to relax and explore this final bastion of a once great nation. This is truly an amazing chance to explore this most famous of England’s strongholds, steeped in history one day is not really long enough to absorb all that Gibraltar has to offer.

On the 30th we will use tracks, which go down dried up riverbeds and through dense forests towards the famous town of Monda. With it’s oldest bullring in Spain, bullfighting museum, and famous bridge joining the town across a gorge as well as Moorish ruins you will have 2-3 hours to explore this wonderful town.

October 1st and our chief scout Terry will lead us an a days excursion taking in incredible mountain trails (see LRO October edition) with views to have you in awe, this day will be primarily a green lane excursion with lunch and refreshment stops on route in typical Spanish haciendas.

October 2nd a small excursion in the morning on a road trip to Jorox, then off-road past old marble quarries to Casa Rabonella, down to Alozaina and off-road to Rio Grande. You then have a free afternoon to explore the coastline or visit Peurto Banus, the St Tropez of Spain, sit by the harbour sipping cocktails and dreaming if only!!

October 3rd A surprise in stall as we head for the Port of Algiciras, there we leave our vehicles and go as foot passengers on the Catamaran to spend the day in Morocco? Tangier is a city with many faces; it has Mediterranean character but also a lingering memory of the cosmopolitan community of artists and artists who settled there. The town itself probably dates from the protohistoric period somewhere between 3000 and 1000 BC. During the 15th & 16th centuries the town was constantly captured alternatively by the Portuguese and Spanish, until 1661 when a marriage dowry meant Charles 11 oversaw her health! The English continually fortified the town against attacks until finally withdrawing in 1684 leaving the Muslims in control. In 1912 Morocco become a French protectorate, which caused great controversy until 1923 when Tangier was declared an International zone. Since the 1970’s Tangier has relied on tourism and related industries, particularly that of crafts, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year so enjoy and absorb the culture and mystic of this fascinating town for just one day!

On the 4th you have a few hours to relax before we set of on an exploration of the Sierra de Las Nieves national park at Monda. Then driving off-road to Rhonda, lunch at Hunters inn near Rhonda before our on and off road trip back towards Monda.

The length of the trips may vary according to content.

On the 5th we say our fond farewells to Terry and the LRO club Adventure team ( who stay on to lead a group deep into Morocco). You are then at your own leisure to do as you please on your route back to Bilboa where you must be for no later than 10.30am on the 7th for the sailing back to the UK, landing approx. 3.00pm on the 8th

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The
cost payable to the club is £520; this includes guide’s fees, support vehicles, and event management costs, entry fees to National Parks.

Expect the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilboa to cost approx. £495 for a return based on one vehicle and two passengers

Campsite fees will vary from £5-£10 pp per night according to campsite standard and availability.

Hotels will range from £25 pp but we do have the chance to reserve a certain amount of self-catering flats. Our problem with accommodation is reserving it, at the time of entry you will be given a choice of the types of accommodation available. We would like you then to make a choice and pay us a deposit to secure your room/flat/campsite. All accommodation is subject to availability, please bare in mind it is still holiday season and we are not Thompsons!

Vehicle preparation, as normal well-serviced and well-maintained vehicles are a pre-requisite, we do not expect you to fit winches, roof tents, snorkels etc. A few recovery items, CB radio and a sense of adventure are what we are looking for.

Ferry to Morocco at present is about £20 per person but I will confirm the price later.
