Itinerary

Day 1: Fly into Windhoek Airport from the UK. We will meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation and to pick up your fully equipped 4x4 hire vehicle. There will be time to explore Namibia’s capital Windhoek at your leisure. You could take a township tour, shop for crafts or simply soak up the African sun. In the evening everyone meets at Joe’s Beer House for dinner and a relaxed briefing. The comprehensive menu includes exotic meats such as Ostrich, Kudu, Springbok, and Alligator for the more adventurous eaters,
Day 2: A relaxed full day’s drive to Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s largest game parks. On the way we visit Lake Otjikoto that became a watery grave for German cannons at the end of World War One. At Etosha we will overnight in the Namutoni Camp rest camp at the entrance to the park. You arrive in time for an evening’s wildlife viewing at the camp’s waterholes where elephant, giraffe, zebra and warthogs regularly drink.

Day 3: Safari in Etosha with its large lion population. Early morning and evening is the best time to spot the prides alongside cheetah, leopard and spotted hyena. We move to Okaukuejo Camp with its floodlit waterhole that is regularly visited by rare black rhino.Day 4 - 5: We drive southwest towards the remote Damaraland with its open plains and grassland, granite outcrops and distant mountains. We camp at a beautiful community campsite at Aba Huab for the next 2 nights, which is supported by the local Damara tribe. Explore by your 4x4 the Huab riverbed in search of desert elephant and elusive ‘desert lion’. Visit ancient San rock engravings in Tyfelfontein and Burnt Mountain.

Day 6: We drive across the Damara Land Plains to The Save the Rhino Trust campsite on the Ugab River. You may encounter the shy rhino here.

Day 7: We head for Swakopmund via Henties Bay a favourite weekend spot for Namibians. On the way we find the pre-historic Welwitchia plants and visit the seal colony at Cape Cross. The night is spent in Swakopmund.

Day 8: Exploring Swakopmond with its old German buildings, the prime holiday resort of Namibia. Optional activities include Quad biking, Dune Boarding and Parasailing. Here you will have your first glimpse of the awesome Namib dunes.

Day 9 - 12: We hit the dunes. Only a limited number of people are allowed to visit the Namib Desert and we will be the only group there – a real privilege.

Our expert guides will explain every sand driving trick via two way radios to enable you to get the best from this adventure. For the next two nights we will camp under the stars away from all civilisation. As the dunes get progressively higher you can test your newly acquired skills.

The trail leads past the abandoned diamond mining settlements of Holsatia and Conception. Rarely visited, these are incredibly well preserved - there’re even pots on the stove from the day the miners finally left in 1914.

We drive along the beach where we pass the shipwrecks of the Eduard Bohlen & Shawnee and circumnavigate the saltpans of Sandwich Harbour. It’s a race against the tide today as we reach Langewand, which literally means Long Wall. Here the dunes fall dramatically into the sea. We drive a small gap between a 300ft wall of sand and the Atlantic Ocean. We enter the ‘Roller Coaster’, a series of massive ‘roaring’ slip faces. Its thrilling driving and gives breathtaking views of Sandwich Harbour. The trail ends at Walvis Bay.

Drive back to Windhoek the next day in time for the evening departure to London Gatwick
